Indianapolis will update its Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zoning policy to build more housing and businesses near all transit routes. Let’s have our voices heard before they start revising.
All Aboard!
No prior advocacy experience needed. TRU volunteering provides opportunities for learning, leadership, and creativity.
Outreach and Tabling
Talk with transit riders and the public, share information at events and bus stops, collect feedback, and help connect more people to the union’s work.
Serving on a Committee
Help guide the union’s priorities, plan actions, give input, and move projects forward.
Content & Communications
Help create social media posts, emails, flyers, graphics, photos, videos, and other materials to engage the community.
Policy and Law
Support research, review policies, track public meetings, help understand ordinances or transit rules, and identify ways to improve transit through advocacy.
Grants and Fundraising
Help find funding opportunities, write grant materials, plan donor outreach, and support fundraising efforts that keep the union’s work going.

Transit Equity Day
Transit Equity Day is celebrated each year on Rosa Parks’ birthday, honoring her legacy and the ongoing fight for accessible, fair, and reliable public transportation for all communities.
In 2026, we held a Bench Drive to support transit rider dignity and fundraise.

Week Without Driving
Over 30% of Americans don’t have licenses or can’t drive, whether because of age, disability, choice, economics, or unreliable access to a motor vehicle. Week Without Driving is a national challenge that encourages everyone to explore transportation alternatives. By taking part, we can see firsthand how reducing car dependency not only makes transportation more accessible, but also helps build healthier, safer, and more connected communities for all.
In 2025, we partnered with Health by Design, IndyGo, Bicycle Garage Indy, People We Meet On The Bus, Tomorrow Bookstore, and CIRTA to:
- Host a sold-out Social Hour at Upland Brewing Company
- Form a book club for When Driving Is Not An Option by Anna Zivarts
- Create a bingo card and share transit stories with People We Meet On The Bus.
